Etched

Water Gourd

on Wooden Pedestal

The carved wooden stopper is decorated with a "singa" or protective deity.

The singa was a mythological figure that was part human, part water buffalo or horse, and part crocodile or lizard.  It's features consist of an elongated face, large bulging eyes, and a prominent nose.

Ancestral figures or other gods may also be represented either standing or sitting on the singa.

Three crescent faces form the wooden base.

The gourd has been cured by fire and richly inscribed with Batak symbolism.

Container is 18" x 7"
