Lazart
Small Peace Symbol
on Sandstone Base
The peace sign originated as the symbol used by the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War.
Artist Gerald Holtom created an emblem that would have visual and political impact.
It was designed around the combination of both the 'N' and the 'D' semaphore flags, which stood for nuclear disarmament.
The 'Peace Sign' made it's debut during a protest march over the 1958 Easter weekend.
Protesters marched 52 miles from London to Berkshire- the site of the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment.
