Mako Shark Tooth and Amethyst Necklace

Amethyst: The Stone of Protection

According to one legend of Greek mythology, Amethystos was a young maiden who was desired by Dionysus. She prayed to the goddess Artemis for protection. The prayer was immediately answered and she was turned into a white stone. When Dionysus realized what had happened, he poured his goblet of wine over the stone in atonement. The white rock absorbed the wine turning it into the purple quartz that we now know as amethyst.

The Maori word for shark is "Mako".

Polynesians believed the shark to be a spirit animal which guarded them from danger.

Mako teeth are prized by the Maori people and are worn as jewelry by tribal leaders and warriors for protection.
