Rawhide Rattle

Rattles were often used in healing ceremonies.

The rhythm was said to echo the heart beat of the Earth Mother.

Everyday Tsohanoai crosses the sky carrying the sun on his back.

At night he hangs the Sun to rest on the west wall of his house.

Legend states that the Navajo Nation was created using maize and bits of Tsohanoai's skin.

He is considered the lifegiver for the tribe and the owner of the stars which guide the paths of the tribespeople.

The decorated rawhide rattle head is approximately 3" in diameter.

The wooden handle is wrapped in sueded leather, accented with colorful seed beads,

pony beads, rabbit fur, fringe and hanging loop.

10" in length
