Traditional Navajo Sandpainting

Set of Three

Variation #2

Creating beautiful dry paintings begin with the hand application of colored sands and powdered pigments in symetrical patterns. Traditionally they are designed on the ground of a hogan or on a cloth or buckskin.

Spiritual in nature, they are used in healing ceremonies. Once the ceremony has finished, the painting is destroyed.

The figures depicted are Holy People or Yeibicheii.
